Construction Safety Week is an annual event that takes place the first week of May to promote safety awareness and improve safety practices. The event was first initiated in 2014 and has since been embraced by various construction companies, organizations, and associations. The week-long event is designed to increase awareness about the importance of safety on construction sites and to recognize the efforts of workers and companies that prioritize safety.
One of the key themes of Construction Safety Week is “safety starts with me.” This emphasizes that everyone on the construction site, from workers to managers and owners, has a responsibility to prioritize safety and look out for the well-being of themselves and their colleagues.
Construction Safety Week is also an opportunity for companies to showcase their commitment to safety. Corporate Safety Officer, Allan Howland states “At MTC and MATECO, hours of safety training, from OSHA 10-hour to HAZWOPER 40-hour, are provided to each of our employees to give them the knowledge so that they can work safely at their jobs, on-site and in the office. Safe work practices are reinforced through daily job site hazards assessments, weekly toolbox talks, and monthly safety meetings. Near-miss reporting, review, and development of mitigation plans ensure we are responsive to an ever-changing work environment on client project sites. And when knowledge, skills, and understanding don’t offer enough protection, personal protective equipment provides a final barrier to injury. Protecting workers is a continuous process, which we take pride in so our workers can do their jobs safely with confidence.”
